Smart locks for short-term rentals, compared.

Short answer. Choose the lock your booking software can already talk to. Airbnb’s own connection works only with certain Schlage, Yale and August Wi-Fi models that have a keypad. Hospitable supports more brands, but only from its Professional plan up. For one lock that does everything, start with the Schlage Encode Plus; if you can’t touch the deadbolt, the August Wi-Fi lock fits over it.

Picked from each maker’s published specs and the lock lists of Airbnb, Hospitable and Guesty. We have not installed these locks ourselves. Prices are the makers’ list prices on Nov 5, 2026; Amazon’s price may differ.

Five locks worth a look

  1. Easiest all-in-one

    Schlage Encode Plus

    $329Maker’s list price · Model BE499WB

Wi-Fi is built into the lock, so there is nothing else to plug in. It stores up to 100 codes, runs about six months on four AA batteries and sounds an alarm if someone forces the door.

Watch out: It needs a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal that actually reaches the front door.

  2. Plain keypad, wide support

Yale Assure Lock 2 Keypad with Wi-Fi

    $259.99Maker’s list price · Model YRD410-WF1

A simple push-button keypad that guests figure out in seconds, Wi-Fi built in and a backup key in the box. Airbnb and Hospitable both list this exact Wi-Fi model.

Watch out: Buy the Wi-Fi version. The Bluetooth-only Assure Lock 2 needs an extra module before you can manage it remotely.

  3. If you can’t replace the deadbolt

August Wi-Fi Smart Lock + Keypad

VariesPrice depends on the bundle · Model ASL-04

It mounts over the inside of the deadbolt you already have. The outside of the door and your current keys stay the same, which matters wherever you are not allowed to change the hardware.

Watch out: Guests can only type a code if you add the keypad, and both Airbnb and Hospitable require it. Its two CR123 batteries last about three months with Wi-Fi on.

  4. Lowest price with Wi-Fi

    Kwikset Halo Keypad Wi-Fi

$199Maker’s list price · Model 938 WIFI KYPD

The cheapest Wi-Fi lock here, with room for 250 codes and the same Grade AAA rating as the Schlage. SmartKey lets you re-key it yourself after a lost key or a change of cleaner.

Watch out: It is not on Airbnb’s own list, so you need software such as Hospitable to send codes. Codes Hospitable creates do not show in the Kwikset app unless your phone is on Bluetooth, though they still open the door.

  5. Weak or no Wi-Fi

    igloohome Deadbolt 2S

    $159.99Maker’s list price · Model IGB4

Its codes are generated from a schedule, so they work with no internet at the door at all. Four AA batteries last up to a year, and it comes with physical keys.

Watch out: Software can only send codes through the $83.99 igloohome Bridge placed near the door. Hospitable does not support units whose Bluetooth ID starts with IGB402.

Start with whatever sends your guest codes

If Airbnb is your only channel, its own lock connection does the work. Each reservation gets its own code, the code shifts when you allow an early check-in or late checkout, and it stops working after checkout. It only covers certain Schlage, Yale and August models with Wi-Fi and a keypad, in the US and Canada.

Once you also take Vrbo or Booking.com reservations, a PMS has to send the codes, and its lock list matters more than Airbnb’s. On Hospitable that means the Professional plan or higher: Host and Essentials do not include smart locks. Professional covers two devices per active property and Mogul four; each extra device is $5 a month.

Check the signal at the door, not on the couch

A router two rooms away can leave the front door with a weak signal. Schlage and Yale need 2.4GHz Wi-Fi; August also works on 5GHz. Stand outside with the door shut and load a page on your phone before you buy. If the signal drops, the igloohome Deadbolt 2S still accepts its scheduled codes with no connection.

Let one system create the codes

Hospitable only changes the codes it created and leaves anything you made in the lock’s own app alone. Pick one source for guest codes, keep the lock app for your cleaner and yourself, and you will never wonder which code a guest received.

Treat batteries as part of the turnover

The August lock lasts about three months on its batteries with Wi-Fi on, the Schlage about six and the igloohome up to a year. Airbnb’s connection warns you when a lock runs low, but a dead lock on arrival day is still your problem. Add a battery check to the turnover list and keep the backup key somewhere a local contact can reach.

Questions hosts ask

Can I connect a Bluetooth-only lock to Airbnb?

No. Airbnb’s connection needs a lock with Wi-Fi and a keypad or touchscreen. A Bluetooth-only model has to go through a PMS that supports it, often with a bridge.

Does Hospitable’s Host plan include smart locks?

No. Smart lock integrations are only on the Professional, Mogul and Legacy plans. On Host or Essentials, Airbnb’s own connection is the way to automate codes for Airbnb stays.

Which of these works with Guesty?

Guesty says its Locks Manager connects to more than 40 brands, including Schlage, but only locks with a keypad, and it reaches igloohome locks through their bridge. The exact model list is visible only inside a Guesty account, so check it before you buy.

I host outside the US. Does any of this apply?

Airbnb’s own lock connection is only available for listings in the US and Canada. PMS connections and the locks themselves vary by country, so check each maker’s regional page.
