Lockboxes for Airbnb self check-in, compared.

Short answer. A lockbox is the cheapest self check-in, and the backup when a smart lock loses power or Wi-Fi. Airbnb advises a unique code for each booking: a dial or push-button box shares one code until you reset it, while the igloohome Keybox 3 issues a timed PIN for each guest, even offline. If you can drill, start with the Master Lock 5401D; if you can’t, the 5400D hangs over a doorknob.

Four lockboxes worth a look

  1. The Master Lock 5401D lock box: a black and silver box with four combination dials under its weather cover.

    Simplest wall mount

    Master Lock 5401D

    $42.13Maker’s price · Model 5401D

Four dials you set to your own code, a weather cover that keeps the dials from freezing, and room for several keys without jamming. It screws to the wall, so the spot never moves.

Watch out: Every guest uses the same code until you change it by hand at the box, and Airbnb advises a unique code for each booking.

  2. The Master Lock 5400D lock box with the tall shackle that hangs it over a doorknob and four combination dials.

    No drilling

    Master Lock 5400D

    $44.92Maker’s price · Model 5400D

Its shackle hangs over a doorknob, so you can use it where you cannot drill, such as a condo door. Same four-dial code, weather cover and roomy inside.

Watch out: A box hanging on the knob shows where the key is, and the shared code still needs changing between bookings.

  3. The Master Lock 5423D wall lock box with a telephone-style push-button keypad and its weather cover open.

    Push buttons, easy at night

    Master Lock 5423D

    $66.57Maker’s list price · Model 5423D

A telephone-style keypad with large push buttons that stay easy to use in low light, a weather cover and a wall mount. Guests press a code instead of turning dials.

Watch out: It costs more than the dial boxes and still shares one code across guests until you reset it.

  4. The black igloohome Smart Keybox 3 with its round touch keypad, shown next to its side profile.

A new code for every guest

    igloohome Smart Keybox 3

VariesPrice depends on the seller · Model IGK3

Issues one-time, timed, recurring or permanent PIN codes and Bluetooth keys that work with no Wi-Fi at the box, and can sync with your property management software to send each guest a code. It is IP66 rated and comes with two shackle sizes for knobs, handles or a screw mount.

Watch out: It runs on batteries and needs the igloohome app or a connected booking tool, so check that your software supports it first.

Give each booking its own code

Airbnb advises a unique access code for each booking guest, whichever entry method you use. With a dial or push-button box that means resetting the code between stays; a box that issues codes per guest, like the igloohome Keybox 3, does it for you.

After you install a lockbox, update your listing, and tell guests where it is and how to open and close it. Airbnb suggests adding photos.

Keep one as the smart lock’s backup

A smart lock can lose its batteries or its Wi-Fi. A lockbox with a physical key nearby is the cheapest fallback, and our smart lock guide checks which locks come with a key.

Questions hosts ask

Does Airbnb allow a lockbox for self check-in?

Yes. Airbnb lists a lockbox with a smart lock and a keypad as self check-in methods, and asks you to update your listing and explain where to find it and how to open it.

Do I need to change the code after every guest?

Airbnb advises giving each booking guest a unique access code. A mechanical box keeps one code until you reset it, so plan a reset at each turnover or choose a box that issues codes per guest.

Which lockbox works without drilling?

The Master Lock 5400D hangs over a doorknob with its shackle, and the igloohome Keybox 3 can attach to a knob, a handle or a shackle as well as screws.
